How To Update Your Hyundai Navigation

Hyundai’s touch-screen navigation system is just one of the many appealing features you can look forward to when purchasing a Hyundai vehicle. While third-party programs accessible via your smartphone can often provide navigation, there’s nothing like the convenience of getting this functionality straight from your car. Using the vehicle’s built-in navigation means you’ll never get lost or struggle to find the right route, even if your phone isn’t with you or you’re using it for something else. You can set down your smartphone comfortably and turn instead to the built-in features of your vehicle.

You’ll need to update this system periodically to ensure that you always get the latest information from your built-in navigation. Here’s everything you need to know about checking your current map version, accessing the latest update, and adding that update to your Hyundai vehicle.

What Is the Hyundai Navigation Update?

In May 2022, Hyundai released an exciting navigation update that enhances the following systems:

  • Premium Gen5 Navigation.
  • Premium Gen2 Navigation.
  • Standard Gen5W Navigation.
  • Standard Gen5 Navigation.
  • Standard Gen4 Navigation.

This update allows you to choose your routes more mindfully. You can choose the fastest, most economical, or the route that utilizes highways the most. You’ll see the distance and travel time for every route at a glance, so you can make quick, efficient choices while you’re traveling.

If you’re searching for a specific point of interest, the updated navigation system will streamline this for you. Instead of simply searching for restaurants as a generality, you can now enter the specific name of the restaurant or chain that you want to find. This eliminates the clutter and helps you pare down to the results you really want as quickly as possible.

The Hyundai navigation update also delivers a new voice recognition character. When voice recognition is activated, this virtual personal assistant appears on a split screen. By utilizing this feature, you can enjoy hands-free help while driving, making it quick, easy, and safe to activate the new navigation features en route to your next stop.

Who Is Eligible for the Navigation Update?

The navigation update works for any Hyundai vehicle that has built-in navigation. This differs from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though these programs also offer navigation. To see if you have built-in navigation, open the SETUP menu and look for System or Sys Info. If you have built-in navigation, you will see a “map version” number noted here. Compare the listed number with the latest update number noted on Hyundai’s site to see if you have the update already or still need to install it. Eligible vehicles include:

Download and Install the Update

If you like to take a DIY approach to your vehicle maintenance and management, Hyundai offers a convenient option that lets you do so. The following steps are appropriate for Hyundai models with a USB drive but no SD card. First, you need to gather the right equipment. You need a USB thumb drive with an SD card that has:

  • An available storage capacity of 32GB or more.
  • Speed class over 10 MB/s.
  • FAT32 file system.

Download the Navigation Updater to get started. Hyundai offers convenient downloads for either Windows or Mac. If you’re using a PC, make sure you have Windows 10 or higher. Mac computers must have macOS X 10.10. You will also need at least 1GB of C: Drive hard disk capacity available. Use Chrome, Safari, or Microsoft Edge for your download.

Once you’ve downloaded the Navigation Updater, you will follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation process. Mac users may need to open their Security & Privacy preferences and choose to allow the app.

Once installed, the Navigation Updater will appear on your desktop. You will log in to the updater using your MyHyundai email address and password. If you don’t have a MyHyundai account, you must register one. Next, you will select your vehicle and choose a location for the update file. Download the update directly onto the prepared SD card to simplify this part of the process.

You can then complete the update by plugging a USB drive with your SD card into your vehicle. The remainder of the update process will take place in your vehicle using the navigation screen. You must have your vehicle running throughout this process. The remaining steps vary depending on which of the five available navigation systems you have in your Hyundai. Hyundai offers complete update guides online.

Order a Prepared SD Card

If your Hyundai has an existing SD card that it uses for navigation, you can get the update quickly and easily by purchasing a new SD card for your vehicle. You can do this online through Hyundai. Once the card arrives, updating your system is as simple as removing the old SD card and putting the new one in place.
