Fresh Ways To Celebrate Mother’s Day

When it comes to Mother’s Day, you probably find yourself doing the same thing every year to celebrate with mom: taking her out to a nice brunch or dinner and calling it a day. However, if you’ve been itching to do something different this year, there are actually plenty of unique activities and events around Plano, Texas, some of them specifically geared for Mother’s Day, that mom will be sure to enjoy.

And if you realize you may need more space to drive around mom and the family, stop by Huffines Hyundai, and check out some of our new cars, which offer a roomy, comfortable, and safe experience for the whole family.

Celebrate an early Mother’s Day by heading out to McKinney to enjoy the area’s Vintage Market Days. You’ll find two entire buildings filled with vintage (and vintage-looking) goods as well as architectural salvage for those looking to spruce up their homes and gardens with something unique and authentic. There will also be live music and food trucks so that you can take breaks, get snacks, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

The Early Buying Event takes place on Friday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the General Admission event takes place on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can buy tickets for $10, and if you take any children under 12 with you, their admission is free. This gathering is perfect for mothers who love great antique finds and especially for those who would rather avoid the big crowds.

Swiss Avenue Historic District Home Tour

Why not combine a classic Mother’s Day brunch with a tour of one of the most stunning neighborhoods in Dallas at the Swiss Avenue Historic District Home Tour? This annual Dallas spring event will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In addition to getting a close-up look at some of the city’s most beautiful early 20th century houses, you can also enjoy the accompanying open-air art fair, auto display, live entertainment in Savage Park, and the many food trucks that will pull up and make the area home for the weekend.

In case the Texas summer heat arrives early, not to worry, as air-conditioned mini-coaches will take you from one home to the next in comfort and style. You’ll get to see a beautiful Mediterranean villa, a Jacobethan Revival manor house, and even a completely unorthodox Craftsman design, among many other area homes. If you want to go off on your own and tour one of the most gorgeous old homes in the area, head to the Historic Aldredge House, which now includes the Historic House Museum, and join the tours that take place there every half an hour.

Tickets to the Swiss Avenue Historic District Home Tour cost $30 and can be purchased on their website, or you can buy them for $35 the week of the event. Children under 12 receive free admission.

Mother’s Day Market

Explore the stunning grounds of the Dallas Arboretum with mom when visiting the Mother’s Day Market, which takes place on Saturday, May 13, and Sunday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Local artisans and creators gather here every year to sell their homemade treats. You can also get a Family Keepsake Photo with mom and the rest of the family to create a memory you’ll treasure forever.

Go for a Picnic

Getting a reservation for a Mother’s Day meal can be a real challenge and often ends up causing more frustration than it’s worth. If you and your mother both enjoy the great outdoors, why not take her out for a picnic instead? Pick up some of your favorite sandwiches and baked goods in town, or perhaps spend the morning making food with mom, and then head out to your favorite Plano park or outdoor space to enjoy a meal under the sun.

We love and recommend the White Rock Creek picnic area and the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve.

Mother’s Day Drag Brunch at Legacy Hall

Grab brunch and a show at the MOTHER! Drag Brunch at Legacy Hall, which takes place on Saturday, May 13, at noon (doors open at 11 a.m.). Order your favorite brunch dishes and sip on some handcrafted cocktails while you enjoy the show. After the show, you and your mother can chat with the performers themselves at the free meet and greet. Tickets cost $60 per person.

Book a Yoga Session

Spend Mother’s Day experiencing true health, serenity, and relaxation with mom by booking a yoga session together, an especially good idea if your mother likes being active. There are plenty of yoga studios in town to choose from, but if you really want to experience yoga with a twist, why not sign up for Mother’s Day Goat Yoga at The Stix Icehouse in McKinney?

After you finish your yoga session accompanied by a bunch of very friendly goats, you’ll get to enjoy brunch and beverages together.

Start a Family Garden

Instead of doing something on Mother’s Day that’s just going to last for that afternoon, try your hand at something that may last a lifetime by starting a family garden together. Maybe mom has a green thumb and you’ve been putting off learning about gardening for a while, or you’re both gardening experts (or neither of you are, and you can still learn together). Plant her favorite flowers or maybe even a variety of herbs and vegetables that you can use in the future for cooking and family dinners.

Make sure you make all your events and activities that weekend by first stopping by our service center at Huffines Hyundai and ensuring your car is in tip-top shape. Whether your mom is active, loves brunch and a show, or revels in vintage finds, the Plano area gives you the chance to try something different this Mother’s Day.
